Beta Gamma Sigma receives honors

| Carrie Ottum

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) earned "honors" status for the 2019-2020 academic year, which is the third-highest distinction possible for BGS chapters. The status of "Honors" is awarded to a campus where academic excellence is valued and where the chapter's faculty and student officers work diligently to enhance the honor society's reputation on campus.

Beta Gamma Sigma is the premier honor society for students at Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) Internationally accredited business schools.

"BGS is one of the most prestigious academic honor societies to be a member of, particularly for business students. Originally founded at the University of Wisconsin over a hundred years ago, members must finish in the top 10% of their AACSB-accredited business school program," shared Dr. Dan Gullifor, assistant professor of management and marketing and UW-Eau Claire BGS chapter faculty co-advisor.

The UW-Eau Claire BGS chapter was organized in 1957 and later incorporated in 1960.

"Being recognized as one of the top BGS chapters in the country is great honor and it speaks volumes to the quality of students that we have in the college of business at UW-Eau Claire," Gullifor added.

"In our chapter of BGS, the students take ownership and set their own agenda for what they want to get out of their experience, including the community service, guest speakers, and all other activities they engage in throughout the year."

Last year, BGS welcomed one of their largest group of initiates with over 30 new members joining the local chapter. Members were involved in a variety of projects and activities such as monthly meetings focused on professional development discussions and volunteered at Feed My People during the holiday season to help prepare meals for the less fortunate. Guest speakers were invited to meetings to present about opportunities for young professionals in the community and establishing sound financial practices early in your career.

The UW-Eau Claire chapter will be recognized for its outstanding achievement at BGS events, on social media, and in publications, such as the Recognition of Excellence program distributed to business school deans from around the world at AACSB’s International Conference & Meeting. They will also be recognized at AACSB events including conferences and seminars held throughout the year.
