POSITION: A probationary tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant professor is available in the Department of Communication and Journalism in the College of Arts and Sciences. The department seeks a dynamic candidate with expertise in Multimedia or Digital Journalism who is committed to teaching excellence and to maintaining an active program involving undergraduates. This appointment carries an initial two-year probationary appointment beginning with the 2023/2024 academic year, August 22, 2023.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Earned doctorate, or master’s, with significant experience, in Journalism or a related field by August 21, 2023.  (ABD applicants may be considered but must complete the terminal degree by March 25, 2024.)  Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and scholarship. Ability to teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced-level courses in liberal education, the department, and the major including, multimedia journalism, reporting, editing and upper-level core and elective courses for the major (e.g. media law and ethics, immersion reporting, multimedia production). The ability to collaborate with students on research and/or creative activity is essential. Professional experience is expected. Commitment to, and ability to contribute to, EDI initiatives required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Evidence of successful university teaching, [example: knowledge and skills in educational technology, formal and informal assessment practices, classroom management;] The ability to teach courses that advance department and University equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives such as CJ317 Diversity and Communication is a plus. The ability to respond to new directions in journalism, such as new forms of storytelling, new delivery systems or models of journalism and forge collaborations/partnerships with industry, sought.

DUTIES: Teach courses in the Department of Communication and Journalism based on program needs and in accordance with specialization; participate in research and scholarly activities; develop and/or maintain a scholarly research agenda; provide academic and co-curricular advising to students as assigned; engage in service to the department, University and profession.

DEPARTMENT: The Department of Communication and Journalism consists of 11 full-time faculty and staff. The department offers majors in Communication, Integrated-Strategic Communication and Journalism.
