| Carrie Ottum

Taylor Welscher, a marketing major with a marketing analytics emphasis from Caledonia, MN, has been named the 2019-20 Outstanding Business Communication Student by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire business communication faculty.

The Outstanding Business Communication Student Award is presented annually to a senior who demonstrates excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills; has achieved high grades in business communication courses, and has completed (or is in the process of completing) the Advanced Business Communication Certificate.

"Taylor is one of those students you know you’ll remember forever. She is an excellent student, an empathetic and helpful tutor in our Business Writing and Presentations Studio, and just an all-around good person," shared Dr. Paula Lentz, Academic Program Director of the Business Communication program. "I could depend on her and her work ethic in the classroom and the Studio, and I appreciate her smile and her positivity. I know she will be a success wherever she goes!"

Welscher, who graduates this month, completed the Advanced Business Communication certificate in addition to her major. She is also a peer tutor in the Business Communication's Writing and Presentation Studio. She recently started working full-time as a Marketing Analytics Coordinator for Rice Lake Weighing Systems.

Taylor Welscher, In her own words...
I am so grateful to be the recipient of this award. Receiving this award means all of my hard work and dedication has paid off. This is an acknowledgment of a job well done.

Some of the skills that I have learned from my business communication classes include proper grammar, presentation skills, and how to utilize many features in PowerPoint, Word, and Excel. I utilized these skills in order to get the internship that has now led me to a full-time job. I also used all of these skills while working on all my marketing projects and presentations.

I will use this certificate every day in my career. No matter what marketing role I am in, I will always need to write proper emails, give presentations, use Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and even possibly write marketing collateral. My BCOM courses have taught me how to write a proper and professional email, how to give an exceptional presentation, and how to write without making any grammatical errors. Currently in my new role, I need to write numerous emails every day, give presentations monthly, and write social media copy.

My advice for incoming students would be to work hard and never give up no matter how hard things get. Hard work and dedication will always earn you success. Another thing is to enjoy your time at UWEC and take advantage of every opportunity because time flies and before you know it you will be graduating!
