| Carrie Ottum

The College of Business Emerging Leader Award is presented to a current College of Business student who has shown early leadership, is not graduating in 2022, and has earned a GPA of 3.2 or higher. The recipient of the award is selected by the college’s faculty and staff.

Gia Decker, a junior marketing analytics major from Edina, MN, was chosen as this year's College of Business Emerging Leader Award recipient from a list of 618 students who met the award's GPA requirement.

She was presented with a university medallion by Dean Brewer Doran in a virtual celebration. Her name will also be added to the plaque in Schneider Hall listing past award recipients.

In many situations, in order to be successful, communication is key. Gia Decker shares that the College of Business has helped her pursue her future goals by enhancing her communication skills.

"From some of the courses that I've taken, I've acquired and discovered better ways to communicate with my peers," says Decker. "Regardless of my future career, being able to communicate in an effective manner is going to be essential."

After Decker transferred to UW-Eau Claire and declared marketing as her major, she gained a greater knowledge of her passions and what she hopes to achieve after graduation and in the long term.

She has been named to the Dean's List each semester since spring 2021 and was recently inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) chapter at UW-Eau Claire. BGS is the honor society serving business programs accredited by AACSB International—The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Decker hopes to graduate in May 2023 and then pursue a career as a commercial pilot.
