Northern Star Fire, a startup up company dedicated to saving firefighters’ lives, was announced as the grand prize winner at the 2017 Governor’s Business Plan contest in Madison on Wednesday. As Jeff worked on development of his product and business, one of the resources Jeff Dykes utilized was the Small Business Development Center at UW-Eau Claire. Luke Kempen, Director of the SBDC at UW-Eau Claire stated, “Jeff has great passion for his lifesaving device. He has leveraged this passion, assistance from others and hard work into this tremendous success of winning the Governors Business Plan Contest.”
The UW-Eau Claire Small Business Development Center is celebrating the success of one of its clients, North Star Fire, an Eau Claire startup that is the grand prizewinner in the 2017 Wisconsin Governor’s Business Plan Contest.

Samantha began the Supervisory Management Certificate Program in 2014 and will complete her certificate in 2016. She chose this program for her leadership development and training because it was local and provided her the opportunity to learn from people within her own community.
Wisconsin’s 2017 Small Business Development Center of Excellence and Innovation Award was given to UW-Eau Claire’s SBDC office for playing a critical role in the state’s small business community. Luke Kempen and Dave Kochendorfer worked together to develop a financial projection template that is used throughout the Wisconsin SBDC network. Last year, the office’s consulting assisted 192 clients and led to 23 new businesses and 95 new jobs with a capital investment of $8.4 million.
