Social Work Scholarships

Two scholarships are available.

Applicants for this award must meet the following criteria:

• Admitted to the social work program
• Minimum Social Work GPA of 3.0
• Demonstrated leadership on campus and/or in the community
• Interested in a career in the public sector (The public sector is usually comprised of organizations and agencies that are publicly funded - that are owned and operated by the government and exist to provide services for its citizens at the city, county, state, and/or national level; some examples include schools, libraries, social services, law enforcement, health care, military, corrections, etc.)
• Preference to a student who has financial need, although financial need is not required to apply.

Corinne Liegel graduated from UW-Eau Claire and started her professional career as a social worker in Eau Claire County in 1979. She spent the next 39 years passionately advocating for the children of Eau Claire County in Child Protective Services and working with adults with disabilities in Adult Protective Services. Corinne’s compassion, diligence, and spunk made permanent impressions on thousands of children and adults in the Eau Claire area. In addition to her work in the community, Corinne was a long-time member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ church choir and the Master Singers of Eau Claire with an intense love of music and travel. Corinne passed away unexpectedly on November 30, 2017 at her home in Eau Claire, WI at the age of 61. She always put others before herself, as her presence in the greater Eau Claire community would reflect.

• Admitted to the social work program
• Minimum Social Work GPA of 3.0
• This scholarship was created in memory of Jean A. Klein, who served as an Eau Claire County social worker for 16 years.

Applicants for this award must meet the following criteria:

• Admitted to the social work program
• Minimum Social Work GPA of 3.0
• Interested in a career in gerontology (aging).

This scholarship was created to honor Madeleine Lieffring. Madeleine began her social work career working for Pepin County Social Services. She then accepted a teaching position at UW-Eau Claire, where she taught for 20 years. Her focus was in the areas of aging and methods of social work, inspiring students to pursue careers in gerontological social work. She also served for many years as the advisor to Alpha Delta Mu, an organization that recognized social work students. In the words of a colleague, "Madeleine demonstrated a zest for life which was infectious and was perhaps her most lasting contribution to our students." Madeline passed away in 2006.

Elwood T. LeDue, known as Al, grew up in Eau Claire and graduated from Eau Claire High School. Was in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946 and served in the Army of Occupation in Japan. He worked at Uniroyal. Was a co-founder of Royal Credit Union, served on its board of Directors for 16 years, and also served on the board of directors for the Wisconsin Credit Union League.

Virgelee LeDue grew up in Neillsville and graduated from the Eau Claire State Teachers College with a degree in comprehensive science and English. She earned a master's degree in speech from UW-Eau Claire and coached high school forensics students. Virgelee taught for 30 years, including 19 years as a biology teacher, at North High School. She helped to find the Chippewa Valley Theatre Guild.

The award automatically goes to the student with the highest-grade performance of each academic semester in the SW 323 Methods of Social Work Research course.

One scholarship is available.

Applicants for this award must meet the following criteria:

• Admitted to the social work program
• Enrolled as a full-time student in the term that award is distributed.
• Minimum Social Work GPA of 2.5
• Volunteer in the community beyond the 30-hour requirement for service learning
• Financial need is required

Norman graduated from UW-Eau Claire with degrees in sociology and math. He started his career at a camp in northern New York and eventually received a MSW from the Columbia University School of Social Work, where he later served as an adjunct professor. His career was primarily in the field of residential treatment. Norman continued his educational journey and attended seminary, going on to serve a small congregation in White Plains, NY as a Lutheran pastor. It is his hope that through providing this scholarship, he will assist students in attaining their degrees in social work while promoting the importance of service to others in the greater community.
