UW - Eau Claire's ESL classes are for learners who want to improve their academic English to enroll in a degree program either at UW - Eau Claire or other U.S. academic institutions.
Students in the IEP take 4 classes each semester at either the 200 Intermediate or 300 Advanced Level. Students will meet the English proficiency requirements at UW-Eau Claire if they successfully complete the 300 Advanced Level of the Intensive English Program. Click here for more information.
IEP Course Descriptions
All courses listed below are offered every semester. A Placement Test will be given to students to determine what level they will begin in.
This intermediate level multi-skill ESL course is designed to improve listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills as well as grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary while preparing students for academic learning.
Designed for non-native speakers of English. To promote clear pronunciation for effective communication with a focus on comprehensibility to appropriate native-like target pronunciation. This course teaches ESL learners to hear, identify, and clearly articulate the sounds and patterns in spoken English.
In Learning to Learn II, students learn more about the US education system and practice doing group work and project work and setting goals. They learn more about their learning styles and strategies and further campus resources.
This advanced level multi-skill ESL course is designed to improve listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar skills while preparing students for further academic work or a career using English.
This advanced-level course which focuses on the processes of reading and writing will prepare non-native speakers of English for success in academic writing in University-level courses.
This course will improve students' ability to hear, identify and clearly articulate the sounds, stress patterns, intonation and rhythm of American English. Listening skills, oral skills, and clear communication with native speakers will be improved.
In Learning to Learn III, students learn more about the US education system and practice doing group work and project work and complete extensive semester-long projects demonstrating goal-setting. They learn more about their learning styles and strategies and further campus resources and prepare to enter the university.
Continual Assessment and Feedback
Throughout the semester, the instructor of each class will design and administer regular content examinations for that class. These will include both oral and written tests, project work, and performance and proficiency assessments. At the conclusion of the semester, each instructor will submit a final grade for each participant.
ESL Program Placement (TOEFL and ACTFL)
Below are our two levels and their equivalencies by exam score. Students will take a placement exam during orientation week at UW-Eau Claire. Students who test lower than our lowest level, may be required to transfer to another program that offers the appropriate level.
