Building Lifelong Relationships
In the SLHS Department, our faculty and staff are educators and mentors. We work closely with our undergraduate and graduate students to provide them with evidence-based teaching approaches and clinical experiences. We are passionate about the profession of speech-language pathology and share that passion with each of our students.
Abby Hemmerich is a professor in Speech, Language, & Hearing Sciences. Prior to coming to UW-Eau Claire, she practiced clinically in acute care, rehabilitation, and outpatient speech-language pathology settings. Her main area of academic and clinical expertise is voice disorders.
Sarah Schellinger is an Associate Professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences. She teaches courses in Phonetics, Anatomy and Physiology of Speech and Hearing, and Motor Speech Disorders. Prior to working as a faulty member, she practiced as a medical speech-language pathologist in acute care, long-term acute care, and rehabilitation settings.
Dr. Smith teaches the introduction to audiology course given in the department. She also supervises hearing screening teams in both the fall and spring semesters.

Ms. Angie Sterling-Orth, Graduate Program Coordinator and Clinical Professor joined the department in August of 2002. She spends her time in the department supervising in the clinic and off-campus, teaching graduate level coursework in child methods, teaching undergraduate coursework in aural rehabilitation, and serving as Graduate Program Coordinator. Ms. Sterling-Orth co-authored the text Guide to Clinical Supervision (2017).

Ms. Katy Teska joined the Department in summer 2023 as the academic department associate. Her role serves as operations manager for the Department and for the UWEC Speech & Language Clinic. She coordinates the departmental budgets, assists the clinic director in administration, arranges ASHA-approved professional seminar events, manages departmental publications and serves as administrative assistant to the department administrators. Her previous role was as a program manager for a grant supporting K-12 districts and schools with the implementation of an equitable, multi-level system of support. She has supported the development of professional learning opportunities focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion and has a passion for implementing and improving policies and practices in all systems.
