About the Program

Intro

In fall 2024, the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire launched a pilot program at Stanley Correctional Institution (SCI) as part of the University of Wisconsin Coalition for Higher Education in Prison (UW–CHEP). Just one year later, the Higher Learning Commission officially approved SCI as a UW–Eau Claire instructional site—marking an important step in expanding access to higher education across Wisconsin.

The inaugural cohort of 15 students has begun its journey toward the Bachelor of Science in Professional Studies—a flexible, interdisciplinary degree that honors college-level learning already achieved and celebrates each student’s unique path forward. Taught in person by UW–Eau Claire faculty and instructional academic staff, the program fosters authentic connection, curiosity, and a shared commitment to growth.

UW-Eau Claire’s participation in the UW-CHEP reflects our belief that education is a human right and a vital investment in our communities. Our team has worked tirelessly to replicate the campus learning experience within Stanley Correctional Institution. I’m so proud of these efforts as well as our continued dedication to the intellectual and personal growth of all people — a hallmark of the Wisconsin Idea.
Dr. Louisa Rice, Associate Vice Chancellor

This partnership between UW–Eau Claire and UW–CHEP brings to life Vision 2030 and its promise of One University, Multiple Doorways. Each new doorway represents more than access — it represents possibility. With every class and conversation, students are rewriting their futures, building confidence, and discovering the power of education to change what once seemed out of reach.

UWEC faculty, IAS, and emeriti interested in teaching for UWEC’s Prison Education Program should complete the Faculty Interest Application: Opportunity at Stanley Correctional Institution. Here you can share your availability, possible course offerings, and your interest in supporting higher education for incarcerated students. We can also connect you with UWEC instructors who have recently taught in the program.

For donors and partners, this initiative is a testament to what your support makes possible. You are helping open doors that lead to growth, renewal, and hope — creating ripples of transformation that extend far beyond campus to families, communities, and generations yet to come.

Support Second Chances

Education opens doors — even from behind bars. Behind every prison wall is a student with hope, determination, and the courage to change their story. Your support helps students who are incarcerated pursue a college degree—opening pathways to meaningful futures and stronger communities once they return home.

Many of these students face financial barriers that make higher education feel out of reach. Your gift can help cover tuition, textbooks, and even commencement regalia, ensuring that when they cross the stage, their hard work and perseverance are truly celebrated.

When you give, you’re not just funding education—you’re restoring dignity, opportunity, and the belief that transformation is possible. Together, we can turn barriers into beginnings.
