Our undergraduate students have more internship opportunities than geology students at other institutions. This is in part due to the rare industry partnerships we have forged through the Responsible Mining Initiative, giving our students a huge hiring advantage with several industry leaders in the region.
Our efforts to enhance internship opportunities have been a resounding success. For summer 2015, eleven students had paid internships in mining, environmental consulting, and regulatory agencies —more than double the number of internships our students had two years ago, and a significant percentage of the program enrollment. These opportunities are helping to differentiate our program from others in the Midwest.
