Students, Professor Part of Team that Discovered Holocaust Tunnel
When Alex Kleinschmidt struck up a conversation with Dr. Harry Jol during a class trip to the climbing wall on campus, the senior had no idea it would lead to joining a research team that would uncover a secret tunnel 80 Jews dug by hand to escape a Nazi extermination site in Lithuania 70 years ago. Students from Diverse Background Dive into Research
Thanks to a $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation under the Research Experiences for Undergraduates program, eight underrepresented minority students are getting the chance this summer to work on research projects in the areas of biophysical/biochemistry, physical chemistry, materials science and biology at UW-Eau Claire. Six UW-Eau Claire faculty members are hosting the group, three from chemistry, one from biology, and two from materials science. Learn more about external opportunities here.

Professor Brings Early Russian Chemists' Contributions to Light
More than 20 years ago, Dr. David Lewis became curious about the people behind the names of the organic chemical reactions he was teaching to his students. Each reaction is named for the chemist who discovered it. For Lewis, a UW-Eau Claire professor of chemistry, following his curiosity about those chemists has elevated him to rock star status among his chemistry colleagues in — of all places — Russia.
