Named
to honor the African-American astronaut who perished with the
Challenger mission, this TRIO program assists eligible first-generation students from low-income families to prepare for and enter graduate programs
leading to the Ph. D.
Each year at UW-Eau Claire ten to twelve new undergraduate
McNair Scholars embark upon two years of intensive mentoring,
specialized curricular and co-curricular offerings, collaborative
research, and paid internships, all of which groom these candidates
for graduate school. Take a short tour for an introduction to the program. Participants include academically talented
low-income, first-generation students and students from groups
traditionally underrepresented in Ph. D. programs. UW-Eau Claire McNair Scholars
are chosen via faculty nomination.
The
application and nomination deadline for prospective McNair Scholars
is April 16, 2010. For information about eligibility, contact our office (Old Library 2134) at
836-4912 or quinnpa@uwec.edu. Four opportunities to take part in a group information session on the McNair Program are coming up: attend any one of the four on Monday, March 1 at 2:00 PM , on Tuesday, March 2 at 2:00 PM, on Wednesday, March 10 at 3:00 PM, or on Thursday, March 11 at 3:00 PM. The sessions take place in the Birchwood Room of the Davies Center. Download a faculty nomination form and a student application form.

The Past and Present
McNair Scholar alumni can share news, update us on their progress and offer advice by following this link to the Alumni Report Form.
Twenty-one UW-Eau Claire McNair Scholar alumni now hold the doctorate. An additional forty-six hold masters degrees.
As our initial cohort only just graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 2001 these and other data indicate that our Scholars complete advanced degrees in a shorter period of time than the national average. UW-Eau Claire McNair Scholars have successfully competed for prestigious national fellowships including Mellon, Fulbright, Newberry, Woodrow Wilson, Mitchem, Ford, and National Institute of Drug Abuse Fellowships.
They have (or currently hold) national research internships or postdoctoral fellowships from the National Institutes of Health, the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the National Center for Drug Control, the Mayo Clinic, the Woodrow Wilson Center, the National Center for Drug Abuse, the National Science Foundation, the National Park Service, and the New York State Council on the Humanities.
