UW System grants
UW System annually announces competitions of interest to faculty and academic staff. Depending on the type of grant program, some system proposals are handled by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) and some by ORSP. Please call the CETL Office at 836-2385 or ORSP at 836-3405 for current deadline and program information prior to developing a proposal for any of these UW System programs.

Funds to Support Stimulus Grant Applicants - Suspended
Open System Deadline; Open ORSP DeadlineUW System funds are available to support faculty and staff efforts in applying for grants available through the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009. The purpose of the funding is to encourage submission of grant proposals to federal agencies and can be used for release time and summer salary, grant-writing assistance, matching funds, or other special needs. The maximum award is $20,000 per proposal. Click here for the program guidelines and application form.
Grants to Prepare External Grant Applications
Open (System Deadline); Open (ORSP Deadline)
Under the UW System “Release Time” grant program, a UW-Eau Claire faculty member may request a summer stipend of $3,500. The resulting grant proposal must be a request for more than $50,000. Among equally strong proposals, priority will be given to those applying for American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant funds. NOTE: Funding is available by fiscal year on a first come, first serve basis.

We recommend, as a back-up, that applicants also apply to the UW-Eau Claire Summer Extramural Grant Development program. Applicants may apply for both ORSP program AND this grant; in that case, both applications should be submitted to ORSP by March 1.
Prototype Development Fund
Open System Deadline; Open ORSP Deadline
This program provides financial assistance for research and development to advance the commercial potential of technologies developed through the UW System and assigned to WiSys Technology Foundation, Inc. To be eligible, the invention must be disclosed to WiSys and WiSys must agree to market the technology. Examples of research activities include prototype development, preparation of samples for evaluation, and application testing. Wisconsin Fertilizer Research Program

This program supports applied research studies that address a component of the problem in the areas of soil management, soil fertility, or plant nutrition; or that address groundwater and surface water problems that may be related to fertilizer usage. Wisconsin ESEA Improving Teacher Quality Program

This is a grants program for increasing student achievement in the English language arts, mathematics, science, foreign languages, social studies, art and design, dance, music, and theatre, by improving the teaching and principal leadership quality at the K-12 level in Wisconsin's public and private schools. Student Solid Waste Research Grant

An opportunity for undergraduate students interested in research to receive financial support in areas relating to waste reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, solid waste disposal, or disposal of household solid waste. Students from varied disciplines (such as soil, geography, biology, engineering, multimedia digital arts, accounting and sustainable community development) are encouraged to apply. Conference Development Grants (OPID)
October 23 (System Deadline); October 16 (to ORSP)
Programs typically have consisted of workshops, presentations, or mini-conferences on teaching-related subject; funding can be used to pay for guest speakers, and to support travel, materials and some expenses incidental to the funded event. This program does not support travel for individual faculty members attending non-OPID-funded events. Awards may range up to $1,000. Faculty Sabbatical Leave

Applied Research Program & ARG-WiTAG Program

This program encourages faculty to utilize their expertise and to apply their scholarship to support the economic development of Wisconsin, to improve connections between knowledge and practice.It funds research for up to three years in the science and technology fields for development of high-value intellectual property and/or marketable products, while laying the foundation for future external funding. Wisconsin Groundwater Research and Monitoring Program - UW Water Resources Institute (WRI)

This program solicits research and monitoring proposals dealing with groundwater, pesticides, and/or onsite wastewater treatment systems. The following agencies coordinate to create this program: University of Wisconsin System; Department of Natural Resources (DNR); Department of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection (DATCP); and Commerce. Wisconsin Teaching Fellow Program
November 17 (System Deadline); November 10 (to CETL)
This program is designed for outstanding faculty and teaching academic staff who have over ten years of teaching experience. Focusing on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, it gives participants the opportunity at mid-career to contemplate the nature of their own teaching and their students' learning. Throughout the year-long program, the Teaching Scholars undertake a major course revision, culminating in a public presentation of their project at OPID's Spring Conference. Wisconsin Teaching Scholar Program

This program is designed for untenured faculty and academic staff who show exceptional promise as college teachers. Nominees must have at least two years and no more than six years of full-time teaching experience at the college level, with at least one year at their current institution. Solid Waste Program
February 9 (System Deadline); February 2 (to ORSP)
Proposals are sought for research into alternative methods of solid waste disposal, including the reduction of the amount of solid waste generated, the reuse and recycling of materials, composting, source separation, and the disposal of household hazardous waste. Wisconsin Environmental Education Board - WEEB

This program provides grants for the development, dissemination, and implementation of environmental education programs. Funded projects have included state-wide initiatives and local efforts targeted at K-12 students, educators, government officials, and the public. Undergraduate Teaching and Learning Grants (OPID)

These collaborative grants are intended to be used to support systematic inquiry into student learning. They may be used as seed money for a new idea or project, or as a way to supplement research into an existing program or initiative for first-year students. Supporting the Growth Agenda Action Steps

This program seeks to advance system-wide efforts in the following categories:
- New pathways to degrees and other related initiatives to enhance educational opportunities for Wisconsin’s underserved adult population
- New or Expanded Projects for a Wisconsin KnowHow2Go Network, enlisting college undergraduates, faculty, and staff as mentors to K-12 students
- Collaboration with PK-12 community to enrich college preparation in the area of Mathematics
- New or Expanded Projects for the development of a Student Engagement Portfolio

Conference Development Program

Support for programs that promote cooperation and exchange among UW System faculty and are focused on the enhancement of undergraduate teaching and learning. Programs are typically workshops, presentations, or mini-conferences on teaching-related subjects. Conferences must take place between July 1 and December 31, 2010. Support Grants for Racial/Ethnic Studies: Institute on Race & Ethnicity (IRE)

The purpose of the program is to support projects at UW System campuses that relate to the further development of study on racial and ethnic topics.
- Category A: scholarly research with the intention of publication on racial and ethnic topics, maximum dollar request $5,000;
- Category B: development and teaching of new courses pertaining to racial and ethnic topics, maximum dollar request $5,000;
- Category C: events and lectures related to racial and ethnic topics, maximum dollar request $2,000.
- Minority Faculty Research Awards: provide release time and support to tenure-track, minority faculty members for their research and writing in order to enhance their opportunities for achieving tenure.

Closing the Achievement Gap - Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)

The goal of the grant program is to develop and support programs that are effective in promoting institutional change to foster access and excellence for historically underrepresented populations. Particular attention will be given to models, programs and strategies with demonstrated success in closing gaps in achievement in the areas of access, retention and graduation.
