Throughout each semester, SSS plans workshops and social gatherings for students to get to know one another better and supplement their coursework with skill development that will enhance their degree. See this page each semester for the slate of upcoming events.

SSS New Student Welcome and Information Sharing

Taking Care of Business: Financial Aspects of Starting College

Facilitator: Charlie Krula, SSS Academic Advising Coordinator
Financial management is a life skill best learned and practiced early in college.  Learn how to anticipate your college costs, understand your financial aid, and manage your student account; plan and prepare for future expenses such as living off-campus.

Housing Alternatives

Would it be best for you to live in a residence hall, an apartment by yourself, a house with friends?  Learn what factors to consider when deciding on a living arrangement and what questions to ask before you sign your name on the dotted line.

Freshman Career Seminar: Career Planning

Facilitator: Laura Rubenzer, SSS Career Development Coordinator, and ARCC Advisors
This seminar assists students in exploring different majors and helps them learn about the skills and experiences employers are looking for in graduates.  All new freshmen should plan to attend one of the following sessions:

  • Attendance is required for all first-year students in the SSS Program.

SSS Open House

Life Savers: Peer Suicide Prevention Training

Facilitators: Student Wellness Advocacy Team
This session will provide information to increase your awareness about suicide prevention so that you will know what steps to take when someone in your life seems to be suicidal.

Five-Day Study Plan

Join those students who walk into their exams with confidence.  This workshop will show you how to review your status in each course and make study plans for exams.

Sophomore Career Seminar:  Professionalism 101

Find out what employers expect from professionals in both formal and informal settings.  Students will learn how to dress, behave, and interact to make a positive impression in a variety of professional settings.

Registration and Degree Planning: Making Every Course Count

To graduate in the least amount of time, it is important to consider your entire degree program when you register for classes.  This session will provide practical advice on class registration and degree planning.

What Professors Want: Developing Positive Relationships with Faculty

When you apply for scholarships, need recommendations for jobs, or want inside information about your field, it helps to know faculty members you can turn to.  Gain tips from students and professors on how to develop positive faculty relationships.

Recognition Luncheon for Fall Graduates

Facilitator: Bruce Ouderkirk, SSS Director
SSS will host a luncheon for all program participants who are graduating in December in order to celebrate their achievement.  Certificates will be presented to all graduating students.

Fuel Up for Finals

Take a break during finals to relax and have some treats.  The SSS staff invites all program participants to stop by the SSS office for refreshments on the first day of final exams.

Learning Community Events

This is an opportunity for learning community members to meet over pizza, become familiar with the wide range of services available through the SSS program, and learn more about campus life.

  • Ice Cream Social

Learning community members will have a chance to bond over ice cream sundaes. Ice-breakers and team activities will be held to help students get acquainted with other members of the learning community.
Thursday, Sept. 13, 3:30-4:30 pm

  • Low Ropes Course Activities

Learning community members will participate in some team-building activities that encourage cooperation, communication, and problem-solving skills.  Activities will be no more than two or three feet above the ground.
