UW-Eau Claire accounting students to provide free income tax assistance

Beginning March 6, accounting students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will provide free income tax return preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, a service of the IRS and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue.

To qualify for the service, clients should have income of $67,000 or less.

Appointments will take place in the dining area of UW-Eau Claire’s Davies Center, 77 Roosevelt Ave., Eau Claire, from 5-8 p.m. Fridays, March 6, March 13, March 20, March 27 and April 3.

Advance registration through the UW-Eau Claire VITA website is required. Walk-ins cannot be accommodated.

Clients must bring all of the following materials to their appointments:

  • Photo ID
  • Social Security cards for taxpayer and all dependents
  • Earning statements
  • Copy of prior year’s tax return
  • Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement
  • Interest and dividend statements from financial institutions
  • Rent certificates from landlord or property tax statement
  • Financial institutions’ routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit

Certain types of returns cannot be prepared by VITA volunteers: married filing separately, business returns, rental and farm.

For those who are in need of a homestead return only (no federal return required), the Wisconsin Department of Revenue will complete and file those returns for free. The office is located at 718 W. Clairemont Ave., Eau Claire, and can be reached at 715-836-2811.
