The Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents today approved Martini’s appointment, following a recommendation made by a selection committee. He will assume the leadership post on July 1, 2026.
“I’m thrilled that Dr. Ed Martini is joining UW-Eau Claire as its next chancellor,” said Regent Karen Walsh, chair of the Search and Screen Committee. “He brings a collegial and collaborative approach to leadership, and he is poised to advance the university’s mission on day one. I’m also excited that Ed becomes our latest homegrown chancellor, which is an indication of the talent we cultivate at the Universities of Wisconsin.”
Martini is currently serving as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at UW-Oshkosh, where he led a major academic realignment, integrated enrollment and student success strategies with academic planning, and guided a comprehensive reimagining of the Polk Library Commons. Before joining UWO, Martini held leadership roles at Western Michigan University, including Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences, Associate Provost for Extended University Programs, and Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning.
“Through the efforts of university leadership, faculty, staff, and students, UW-Eau Claire has positioned itself well to be a vibrant, thriving institution that serves its students and the Chippewa Valley,” said Arthur Grothe, Professor of Theatre Arts and vice chair of the Search and Screen Committee. “UW-Eau Claire looks forward to the leadership and advocacy that Dr. Ed Martini brings to our campus. He is a passionate advocate of the value of higher education and his integrity, compassion, and creativity are major assets as he assumes the role of Chancellor and stewards the mission and vision that will define the future of the university.”
“UW-Eau Claire is a leader in undergraduate research, interdisciplinary learning, and community partnerships,” said Regent President Amy B. Bogost. “Ed Martini is prepared to elevate the university as its next chancellor. We owe a debt of gratitude to the dedicated committee of Regents, campus members, and local partners who worked relentlessly to bring us a leader like Ed.”
Bogost also praised interim Chancellor Mike Carney for leading the university over the past several months and assisting in the transition to Martini’s chancellorship.
“I look forward to building on the strong commitment to learning, scholarship, and partnerships fostered under chancellors Schmidt and Carney,” Martini said. “The UW-Eau Claire community is eager and engaged, and together we will carry that momentum forward. I can’t wait to become a part of this vibrant university.”
A historian, Martini earned his bachelor’s degree in American Studies at Pitzer College and his Ph.D. in American Studies at the University of Maryland.
Acting Executive-in-Charge Chris Patton and the Special Regent Committee for the UW-Eau Claire Chancellor Search recommended Martini to the full Board of Regents. The Committee includes Regents Walsh, chair; Edmund Manydeeds III, Tim Nixon, Tom Palzewicz, and Amy Traynor.
The Search and Screen Committee includes members of the Special Regent Committee and Grothe, vice chair; Shelby Butteris, Administrative Assistant III; Kent Gerberich, Chief Information Officer, Director of Learning and Technology Services; Kaitlyn Hevrin, Student Body President; Stacey Jackson, Associate Professor of Psychology; and David Minor, President and CEO, Eau Claire Area Chamber of Commerce.
Martini succeeds James Schmidt, who served as chancellor from 2013 until 2025.
