My ongoing research is divided into two broadly defined projects. My most active area of research is focused on the geodynamic and metallogenic reconstructions of greenstone belt assemblages in northwestern Ontario and Minnesota. The primary goal of this research is to examine the trace element and isotopic characteristics of volcanic and intrusive rocks and their base and precious metal deposits to reconstruct the temporal and spatial variations in the tectonics, geodynamics, and crustal architecture during the Neoarchean in the western Superior Province. In modern environments, the crustal architecture of various geodynamic settings (arc, back-arc, continental arc) is relatively well understood and the influence this has on metallogenesis is well documented. However, in Precambrian volcanic terranes, the crustal architecture and/or geodynamic setting is poorly understood or constrained. In fact, the role of modern plate tectonic processes in Archean terranes is debated. This research is achieved through the integration of field mapping, stratigraphic/structural reconstructions, economic geology, and lithogeochemistry. 

My second research project has focused on deposit-scale characterizations of ores and hydrothermally altered host rocks of volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in the Paleoproterozoic volcanic arc sequences in the Penokean Orogeny of Wisconsin. Political and societal issues with sulfide mining in Wisconsin has essential ceased mineral exploration efforts since the late 1990's leaving a poorly understood and understudied Precambrian orogeny behind. An extensive, but poorly documented and underutilized core suite of these VMS deposits is available through the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey. Through internal and external grants, I have re-logged, sampled, and analyzed a significant portion of this core. Collaborative research with undergraduate students at UW-Eau Claire has generated a new understanding of these VMS deposit, in particular the litho- and chemo-stratigraphy of the volcanic strata hosting Flambeau and Eisenbrey VMS deposits as well as improved knowledge of the spatial mineralogical variations and mineral hosts of precious metals in the massive sulfide ore zones.

  • Synvolcanic metallogeny and tectonic reconstruction of the Penokean orogen. Research has focused on the deposit-scale interpretations of various volcanogenic massive sulfide bodies and hydrothermally-altered host rocks in the Precambrian rocks in Wisconsin.
  • Geodynamic and metallogenic reconstructions on Archean greenstone belts. Research has involved assessment of regional-scale volcanic architecture through trace element and isotopic geochemistry.
  • Petrogenesis of volcanic assemblages in Precambrian terranes. This research uses state-of-the-art analytical facilities to obtain in-situ mineral and whole-rock geochemistry to make interpretations about magmatic evolution of ancient terranes and how it influences metal deposits.
