National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) at UW-Eau Claire
Join our Summer 2023 program
We are excited to continue the Summer REU Site under the NSF Grant titled “Advancing high-performance computing opportunities in undergraduate research at UW-Eau Claire to meet challenges of multidisciplinary computational science” in 2023. This REU site will host 10 undergraduate students for a 10-week summer program for three summers (2022-2024).
The Summer 2023 program will take place from June 5 to August 11, 2023. Applications are due March 1, 2023.
Be part of fascinating research projects
The REU site at UWEC will provide a comprehensive research experience in high-performance computing and its importance in several research domains. Students will get an opportunity to conduct research in any of the research domains mentioned below:
Computer Science
Machine learning and its application to social media analytics.
Deep learning and computer vision.
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Quantum chemical simulation to probe events at the electron level.
Multiscale modeling to explore complex biomolecular structures.
Geography and Anthropology
UAV-based vegetation mapping with Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
Materials Sciences and Biomedical Engineering
Computer simulation of electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
Infrared spectroscopic tissue imaging for diagnostic purposes.
Physics
Computational astrophysical study of stellar structure and evolution.
Details of the research projects can be found on the REU Projects page.
You can apply to the REU program here.
Experience STEM at UW-Eau Claire
To inspire a diverse group of students to pursue a career in STEM, the REU program will include the following additional events:
- Workshops related to high-performance computing, computational science, ethics and responsible conduct of research, and laboratory safety.
- Seminars in topics such as undergraduate research, scientific writing, career planning and diversity.
- Guest speaker presentations and field trips.
- Social events.
Participants in this REU program will receive a stipend ($6,000). Food and housing will be provided by UW Eau Claire Housing, and there is no cost to the participants. All field trips will be arranged for the student participants.

Feels like home
During your time at UWEC, you’ll be immersed in the blooming Eau Claire community. While UW-Eau Claire itself has activities to meet countless interests, the surrounding town also offers opportunities for you to get off campus and explore.
