Summary: After service in WWII, McPhee became director of teacher  training at Eau Claire until leaving for Madison in 1948. Contains personal and professional papers of McPhee’s  military career in the United States as well as while he was  stationed in Italy. McPhee’s thesis and other documents  from his educational career. There are early University of  Wisconsin–Eau Claire financial documents regarding scholarships, memorials and other aspects of the university.

Biographical / Historical Note

Eugene R. McPhee was born in Chippewa Falls, Wis. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the Eau Claire State Normal School in 1923 and his Masters of Arts  from the University of Minnesota in 1932. McPhee was superintendent of  schools in Winter and Elk Mound, Wis. prior to serving as Director of Teacher  Training at the then Eau Claire State Teachers College from 1932 to 1941.  McPhee served during World War II in North Africa and Italy as a Reserved Major. When the war ended, McPhee was promoted to Colonel. In April 1948, Mr. McPhee was appointed acting secretary of the Board of Regents of State Normal Schools. Later in 1948, he was made director of the Board and served this position until 1970.

This collection is divided into two series. Series one contains personal and professional papers of McPhee, and Series two contains early University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire financial documents.

Contains lectures notes, Italian correspondence regarding military honors and  immigration to the United States. McPhee’s thesis and other personal and professional documents. Located in Box 1, Folder 6, is an article written by McPhee titled “A veteran speaks his mind,” which talks about McPhee’s impression of the poor quality of education available to veterans.
