Michael Thomas, OMA staff
  • Student Services Coordinator
  • Office of Multicultural Affairs

Michael J. Thomas is a Student Services Coordinator in the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC). In this role, Michael coordinates outreach and community building for incoming and returning African American students, and is the co-advisor for Black Student Alliance (BSA). He also coordinates (and collaborates on) activities for Black History Month and serves as an OMA liaison on and across campus. Michael is passionate about social justice and organizes activities for students of color to explore their (often intersecting) identities in relation to systems of power, privilege and oppression, while paying close attention to the needs and concerns for African American student success.

Before joining the OMA team, Michael worked in the department of Graduate Studies, Outreach and Research in the College of Education at Oklahoma State University (OSU), held a graduate research fellowship at the Oklahoma Policy Institute, and did education/grassroots organizing through the Arkansas Public Policy Panel (APPP). Michael's academic background includes a bachelor's in Business from the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff (UAPB) and a master's in Higher Education and Student Affairs from OSU. In his spare time, he enjoys listening to music, hanging out with friends and family, and cooking amazing food!

Michael's favorite quote: "I have come to believe over and over again that what is most important to me must be spoken, made verbal and shared, even at the risk of having it bruised or misunderstood"
