Karsten Powell began teaching in the Department of Special Education at UW-Eau Claire part time in the fall of 2014 while still teaching high school special education. In fall 2016 Karsten began teaching full-time in the department. Karsten teaches many different courses including Introduction to Learning Disabilities, Assessment of Students with Disabilities, Secondary Methods for Students with Mild Disabilities, Transition for Students with Disabilities, Inclusive Practices for Secondary Education, and Collaboration & Consultation. If life wasn't busy enough, Karsten started attending Edgewood College in 2017 to earn his doctorate degree in Educational Leadership. He has spent many nights and weekends studying and doing research while also traveling to Madison to attend classes all while teaching full time and raising his family. We are so proud that Karsten successfully defended his dissertation (virtually due to COVID-19) on April 24. The department members wanted to celebrate with him but our options were limited due to the Safer at Home order. The best we could do was surprise him with a vehicle train to his house and celebrate with a toast in his honor (6 feet apart). We could not let this occasion pass by without celebrating Karsten's accomplishment. Congratulations Dr. Powell!
