Another successful season

| Kevin Meinholz

Tyler GenoveseThe Blugold athletics program had another successful season last year.

In the 2011-12 NCAA Division III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings, which measures the success of programs from around the country based on performance at national championships, the Blugolds finished in 15th place out of more than 430 institutions. It was the sixth year in a row the Blugolds claimed 18th place or higher.

The men’s indoor track and field team had the best national finish, claiming runner-up status at the NCAA Championship in March, the highest finish in team history. Tyler Genovese won the national title in the 35-pound weight throw, becoming just the sixth student-athlete in Blugold men’s indoor track and field history to be crowned a national champion.

Catherine WagnerAt nationals in the spring, Catherine Wagner captured the first individual title in Blugold women's golf history, helping lead the team to third place to tie for the best finish as a team in program archives.

A total of 12 teams represented UW-Eau Claire at fall, winter and spring national championships.

In the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Blugolds claimed five league titles (women's basketball, women's cross country, women's golf, softball and women's volleyball). In the WIAC All-Sports competition, which ranks teams based on final standings in each sport, the Blugold women won their sixth straight and 12th overall title, while the entire program finished second in the combined honor.

In the classroom, 521 Blugold student-athletes combined for a grade-point average of 3.131 during the 2011-12 academic year. The Blugold athletics program also was honored with a WIAC All-Academic Award for the third straight year, which is presented to athletic programs finishing with a higher GPA than their institution's general student body.
