Dr. Airth-Kindree speaks to UW System Regents

Associate Professor, Dr. Norah Airth-Kindree was invited to present at the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents Meeting held on the UW-Eau Claire campus, October 6, 2016. She discussed the importance of preparing future health care professionals to understand how social and economic factors impact health outcomes.

As Dr. Airth-Kindree noted, UW- Eau Claire is preparing the next generation of nurses and other health providers to meet this challenge by creating opportunities for students to see the connection between an individual's socio-economic status and their overall health. An example of this is an inter-disciplinary program developed by UW-Eau Claire and Marshfield Clinic to address health justice in order to strengthen health outcomes in our region.

In partnership with staff and students from UW-Eau Claire Honors Program, Social Work Department, Health Careers Center and Nursing Department, Marshfield Clinic enlisted the support of the Family Health Center of Marshfield to create Community Connections Team. Patients visiting the health care facility were given the opportunity to to meet with a CCT volunteer to learn about community resources available in order to obtain food, transportation or clothing.

The experiences students gained while serving as CCT volunteers provided them with not only a theoretical grounding drawn from interdisciplinary faculty collaboration but also an opportunity to translate theory into practice during direct contact with targeted patient populations.

These high-impact experiences give UW-Eau Claire health care students a broad preparation in health equity.

Appearing with Dr. Kindree, to her right, are Patrick Disterhaft a UW-Eau Claire biology major and Community Care Allies student president and Mr. Trevor Begin, who is the program manager for the Community Connections Team, Marshfield Clinic Center for Community Outreach.
