yMusic residency program offers music students new opportunities

UW-Eau Claire’s music program has a long and rich history of connecting students with professional musicians through its visiting artists program.

However, the music faculty are taking their efforts to new levels this year by hosting yMusic for a yearlong residency, giving Blugolds multiple opportunities to work one-on-one and in groups with the team of accomplished musicians.

A unique chamber orchestra of six instrumentalists, yMusic features musicians who met while studying at Julliard. The group has premiered important new works, collaborated with well-known musicians, including Paul Simon, John Legend and The Tallest Man on Earth, and have conducted residencies at top music programs in the country.

Blugolds will interact with the yMusic members when the musicians visit campus March 4-6.

Throughout the year, yMusic members are working closely with five UW-Eau Claire composition students, each of whom will write a piece that will eventually be recorded in the state-of-the-art recording studio at Pablo Center at the Confluence.

In addition, students who work in chamber groups will be coached by yMusic, and the group also will work with students through master classes and other opportunities open to the entire music department.
