UW-Eau Claire to host Free Speech Week events Oct. 17-23

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is planning several events this month to celebrate Free Speech Week, Oct. 17-23.

Free Speech Week is an event that aims to raise public awareness about the importance of freedom of speech and of the press in American democracy and to celebrate that freedom.

UW-Eau Claire events include:

  • “Free Speech, the Supreme Court and John Stuart Mill,” 5 p.m., Oct. 17, Room 1804, Centennial Hall. Dr. Eric Kasper, a political science professor at UW-Eau Claire and director of the Menard Center for Constitutional Studies, and Dr. Troy Kozma, a philosophy and religious studies professor and academic chair at UW-Eau Claire – Barron County, will lead the presentation and discussion. The Menard Center for Constitutional Studies will sponsor the event.
  • “A Run for More,” 7 p.m., Oct. 19, Woodland Theater, Davies Center. The film will screen, followed by a virtual Q&A session with Frankie Gonzales, who campaigned to be the first openly transgender elected official in Texas. The event is co-sponsored by the Menard Center for Constitutional Studies and UW-Eau Claire’s Q-Fest Film Festival.
  • “Taboo, Free Speech and Facts We Can’t Talk About,” 5 p.m., Oct. 20, Room 1804, Centennial Hall. Bestselling author Wilfred Reilly will lead the discussion. Reilly’s most recent book is titled “Taboo: 10 Facts You Can't Talk About.” The Menard Center for Constitutional Studies will sponsor the events.

Free Speech Week is an annual nonpartisan, nonideological event that brings people together to recognize and celebrate the freedoms Americans share.
