The Blugold Real Estate Foundation and other partners planning an events and recreation complex along Menomonie Street in Eau Claire have proposed that much-needed hotel and convention space also could be developed on the site.
At a June 28 press conference, Visit Eau Claire joined the Menomonie Street project partners in promoting the event center site as a location for new hotel and convention space. The local need for hotel and convention space is a renewed topic of public discussion following recent news that the Plaza Hotel & Suites, Eau Claire's largest convention facility, will close and be demolished at the end of 2016. The Plaza site will be the location of a new Marshfield Clinic hospital.

The John H. and Carolyn Sonnentag Event and Recreation Complex partnership was formed following a commitment of approximately $10 million in money and land from UW-Eau Claire alumni John and Carolyn Sonnentag and County Materials Corporation in August 2014. The gift to the Blugold Real Estate Foundation, a supporting entity of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, was intended to make possible the development of a facility where UW-Eau Claire and community organizations can hold larger-scale events than can be accommodated by the university's existing facilities.
