Roberta “Bobbie” Schmidt ’76 has received high honors for her career in education. She was named 2009 Wisconsin Elementary Principal of the Year by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators. She also was recognized as a 2009 National Distinguished Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals.

“Being recognized at this level for doing work that you are passionate about is very rewarding and humbling,” said Schmidt, who was a special education/elementary education major at UW-Eau Claire. “I enjoy being in an environment focused on making a difference in the lives of children. I can’t imagine being anywhere else!”

Schmidt was an elementary classroom teacher for 25 years prior to becoming an administrator. For the past seven years, she has been the principal of Richmond Elementary School in Appleton, Wis., where she lives with her husband, David Schmidt ’75.

“I left Eau Claire with an understanding of the importance of recognizing the strength of each student and a firm belief that all children can learn,” Schmidt said.
