Riley McGrath

A licensed psychologist with university counseling services leadership experience and a varied clinical background has been named director of Counseling Services at UW-Eau Claire following a national search.

Dr. Riley McGrath, who has served in Illinois State University’s Student Counseling Services since August 2013, will begin his duties at UW-Eau Claire on Aug. 15.

At ISU, McGrath’s leadership responsibilities have included coordination of the university’s Student Counseling Services group therapy program. He has facilitated the expansion of the program’s offerings from primarily interpersonal process groups to also include psychoeducational workshops and population-specific groups. His changes have resulted in both increased group utilization rates and a decreased counseling services waiting list.

McGrath also has coordinated crisis services in ISU’s Student Counseling Services. His responsibilities have included coordination of both daytime and after-hours emergency coverage, updating crisis services policies and procedures to comply with shifting state and federal laws, and development and facilitation of staff crisis training.

McGrath’s clinical experiences also included a postdoctoral fellowship at Marquette University Counseling Center, a predoctoral internship in Counseling and Psychological Services at the University of Michigan, and an advanced practicum at the University of Northern Colorado’s Counseling Center. He also worked for two years in a residential substance abuse program and completed a master’s internship at a community mental health center.

McGrath earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Montana, a master’s degree in counseling psychology from the University of Kentucky and a doctoral degree in counseling psychology from the University of Northern Colorado.
