The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has a long history of providing students with high-impact practices in and outside of the classroom. Currently, four out of five UW-Eau Claire students participate in these value-added experiences during their college career. A new $5,000 scholarship established by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation will make these experiences more accessible to interested high-ability students.
The Centennial Experience Scholarship is geared toward incoming freshmen who demonstrate an interest in high-impact experiences, which include study abroad, research, immersion courses and internships. Recipients of the scholarship will receive an initial $2,500 award to be applied toward tuition their first year and an additional $2,500 to fund participation in any variety of UW-Eau Claire's signature high-impact programs to ensure an enhanced educational experience.
The scholarship is unique among universities in that it recognizes the value of out-of-the-classroom experiences and demonstrates UW-Eau Claire's commitment to excellence both in and out of the classroom, said Heather Kretz, UW-Eau Claire director of admissions.
"It allows students the freedom to select which experience best suits their interests, discipline or career goals," Kretz said. "Experiences like study abroad, research, internships and immersion courses give our Blugolds the edge in finding their passion and securing their career or graduate school placement."
Students must meet general admissions scholarship criteria (ACT of at least 25, top 25 percent high school rank or GPA of at least 3.5) to be eligible. The scholarship will first be awarded during the 2014-15 academic year to students entering UW-Eau Claire in fall 2015.
Students who have been admitted to UW-Eau Claire are encouraged to apply for the Centennial Experience Scholarship before the priority deadline of Dec. 1 or by the Feb. 1 general deadline. Information about the Centennial scholarship and others is available on the Admissions scholarship Web page.
