Evidently, when Olga Custodio hears the words "No, you can't," her usual reply is "Watch me."
When Custodio, the daughter of a U.S. Army attache from Puerto Rico, was turned away from enrolling in ROTC at age 16 because she was a woman, it ignited in her a drive that would not be satisfied until she succeeded in her dream of becoming a military pilot.
Custodia will present "An Evening with Olga Custodio" at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19 in UW-Eau Claire's Schofield Auditorium to open the 2019-20 season of The Forum. Doors will open at 7 p.m.
The first Latina to complete U.S. Air Force military pilot training and serve as a fighter pilot, Custodio then went on to become the first Latina commercial pilot for American Airlines. Since retiring from her 20-year post as an airline captain, she also has become the first woman flight instructor at two major U.S. Air Force bases.
Custodio energizes audiences around the country with her irrepressible spirit, her dedication to service and country, and her commitment to empowering young women to succeed in STEM and other male-dominated fields. She hopes to inspire listeners to believe in themselves and in her personal mantra, "If you want something to happen, you have to go out there and make it happen."
