Sports are an important part of senior Roger Steen's life, and on March 14 a long-time dream came true when the kinesiology major won his first indoor national championship in the shot put, setting a school and meet record and breaking the school record for the fourth time this season. Being on the UW-Eau Claire men's track and field team was a source of pride for Steen, but he also learned what being a leader and captain really meant. As a captain, Steen put time into helping teammates prepare so they could shine and also learned that there are many different ways to motivate others. Being a coach at different points throughout his life has provided him with the ability to learn from both sides of the competition atmosphere, making him an effective leader. After graduation, he plans to continue coaching in either football or track and field to help athletes reach their own dreams. Steen's passion for sports and ability to lead makes him a competitor AND coach, and that's pretty powerful.
