Campus games, parade, football and alumni gatherings part of Homecoming 2018

| Judy Berthiaume

Thousands of Blugolds will gather on campus and in the community next week for the 2018 Homecoming festivities, one of UW-Eau Claire’s biggest celebrations of the year.

Current students and alumni will come together to celebrate being a Blugold, participating in the many events that have long been part of the university’s Homecoming tradition.

Events will range from a student pep rally to alumni gatherings, as well as the popular Homecoming parade and football game.

“Alumni love coming back to campus to visit with college friends or to check in with a favorite professor,” says Jane Larson, coordinator of alumni engagement. “In recent years, they also are eager to see how much the campus and downtown Eau Claire have changed and grown. Our current students have favorite activities on campus during the week, and they enjoy mingling with alumni at the parade, football game and other activities.

“Homecoming is a time to celebrate being a Blugold and a great reminder about why this place is so special.”

This year’s Homecoming celebration will run Sept. 30-Oct. 7.

Students will gear up for Homecoming by joining in games and competitions throughout the week.

Homecoming events will kick off with an outdoor movie Sunday, Sept. 30. The movie, "Incredibles 2," will screen at 8 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall (Rain site: Woodland Theater, Davies Center).

Outdoor games will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, on the Towers Field on upper campus.

The always popular "Yell-Like-Hell" competition and pep rally begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, in Zorn Arena, followed by a late-night bonfire behind Sutherland Hall on upper campus.

The "Varsity Night Live!" show, featuring the talents of UW-Eau Claire students, will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, in Zorn Arena.

The Homecoming celebration will continue after the game, with "The Fifth Quarter" beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday in Carson Park. The postgame event will feature the Alumni Blugold Marching Band.

Homecoming events will end on Sunday, Oct. 7, with the annual "Adopt-a-Block" cleanup. Students will gather at 1 p.m. in the Haas Fine Arts parking lot to clean up neighborhoods that are near campus.

Several other events for alumni are planned for Homecoming weekend, all designed to bring together Blugolds from various majors, residence halls, sports teams and other organizations.
