Actuarial Science student awarded Casualty Actuarial Society scholarship

Lily Cook, Actuarial Science major and Information Systems minor, was recently awarded a 2017 Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) Trust Scholarship award. This national scholarship is given out annually to three students. Lily was awarded $5,000 and was invited to attend the 2017 CAS Annual Meeting, held in Austin, Texas in November 2017.

Students who have passed actuarial exams and have gained actuarial internship experience are preferred for this scholarship. The application required two letters of recommendation and one essay. The essay was to be focused on changes the students believe will occur in the casualty industry in the near future and why they will be successful as a casualty actuary.

For Lily's application, her essay was about up and coming technologies that may affect the casualty industry including FinTech (Financial Technology) and autonomous driving cars.

The CAS Annual Meeting is a gathering of property-casualty insurance actuaries. Here actuaries are able to attend various information sessions about relevant topics in the casualty industry as well as network with actuaries from around the country. The scholarship recipients will be recognized during this meeting.
