Students from 20 area high schools compete in annual math meet

Forty-six teams representing 20 area high schools participated in the 33rd Annual Mathematics Meet for high school students, held Feb. 21 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. 

Dr. Abra Brisbin, assistant professor of mathematics, and Dr. Alex Smith, professor and chair of the mathematics department, welcomed students and their sponsors from the following high schools: Aquinas (La Crosse), Augusta, Black River Falls, Bruce, Chippewa Falls, Cochrane Fountain City, Durand, Ellsworth, Gilmanton, Logan, McDonell (Chippewa Falls), Memorial (Eau Claire), Menomonie, Mondovi, North (Eau Claire), Regis (Eau Claire), Spring Lake Park (Minn.), Stanley-Boyd, Viroqua and West Salem. 

The Memorial team, Electric Flux, took first place in the large school division, AAA. Electric Flux, sponsored by Deb Smieja, consisted of team members Diane Hu, Billy Jang, Josh Gilberstadt, Adam Nijahwan, Kate Tana and Kenny Tana. 

The North team, The North I, took second place in the large school division, AAA. Pam Christensen was the team sponsor, and the team members were Jeremiah Buenger, Cory Burich, Josie Kajer, Megan Mundan, Drake Sarkauskas and Janessa Wiese. 

The Durand team, The Purple Polars, took first place in the medium school division, AA. The team, sponsored by Rod Rosemeyer, consisted of team members Sarah Abramson, Maisy Dodge, Dylan Bauer, Connor Tappe, Gavin Tappe and Whitney Tomlinson. 

The Black River Falls team, The Big Toes, took second place in the medium school division, AA. Susan Polzin was the sponsor, and team members were Brad Bluedorn, Zach McJoynt, Nik Pardoe, Gary Ramos and Riley Rios.

The Regis team, Life of Pi, took first place in the small school division, A. The team, sponsored by Allen Sandberg, was made up of Sam Byrne, Allie Jacobson, Mitchell Petit, Paul Petit and Ben Sokup.  

The McDonnell team, The Mackmaticians I, took second place in the small school division, A. Tony Reiter was the sponsor, and team members were Tim Buchmann, Sam Huffcut, Jacob Lindsley, Tessa McChesney, Sydney Schemenauer and Sam Zwiekel.  

First-place individual awardees were: Class AAA — Josh Gilberstadt, Memorial, Eau Claire; Class AA — a tie between Nik Pardoe, Black River Falls, and Connor Tappe, Durand; and Class A — a tie between James Goings, Augusta, and Sam Byrne, Regis, Eau Claire. These students will receive a four-credit hour scholarship to UW-Eau Claire.  

Second-place individual awardees were: Class AAA — a tie between Jarod Pivovar, Spring Lake Park, and Jeremiah Buenger,  North, Eau Claire. These students will receive a three-credit hour scholarship to UW-Eau Claire. 

Third-place individual awardees were: Class AA — Gavin Tappe, Durand; and Class A — Olivia Huang, Regis, Eau Claire. These students receive a two-credit hour scholarship to UW-Eau Claire.

Fourth-place individual awardees were: In Class AAA — Nathan Angerhofer, Spring Lake Park; Class AA — Dylan Bauer, Durand; and Class A — Tim Buchmann, McDonell, Chippewa Falls. These students will receive a one-credit hour scholarship to UW-Eau Claire.

Fifth-place individual winners were: Class AAA — Diane Hu, Memorial, Eau Claire; Class AA — a tie between Zach Trautsch,  Viroqua, and Brandon Schran, West Salem; and Class A — Michael Hoffmann, Regis, Eau Claire

Sixth-place individual winners were: Class AAA — a tie between Jinping Li, Logan, and Sayan Das, Spring Lake Park; and Class A — a tie between Tessa McChesney, McDonell, Chippewa Falls; and Molly Scoczyk, Regis, Eau Claire.

Scholarships, valued at over $333 per credit, are funded by a grant from Xcel Energy to the UW-Eau Claire department of mathematics.
