A Seminar on 401Ks, Mutual Funds, and Financial Literacy by Lecturer of Finance and Alumnus, Mark Alfuth

McIntyre Library will host a special event to promote financial literacy on campus for individuals just about to graduate, or anyone looking to increase their understanding about their investment options. The event will take place in the McIntyre Library breezeway, second floor, on Wednesday, May 3rd from 12:00 – 12:45 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch, and stay for a question and answer segment after the presentation.

The presentation is part of a growing collaboration between the Accounting + Finance department and McIntyre Library as the first of many proposed financial literacy workshops and one-on-one consultations.

“Each semester we ask our research center student workers what they would like to see in the library, and instruction on personal finance has been a topic that comes up time and time again,” said Jenna Vande Zande, library services assistant. “Once we started reaching out to individuals on campus, we were thrilled to discover that the goal of financial literacy for all UW- Eau Claire students already has some great support.”

Anyone on campus or in the community who feels they will benefit from the presentation are welcome to attend. Professor Mark Alfuth is a Blugold alumnus and Lecturer of Finance in the Accounting + Finance department. Along with teaching finance and business students, Alfuth is passionate about educating individuals about financial literacy and long-term planning. His presentation will include information about the basics of mutual funds, 401K and 403(b) accounts, and how to balance your investments.

Dr. Raj Aroskar, Department of Accounting + Finance Chair, commented on the series, “Blu’$ Gold, Financial Management Association (FMA), and the Department of Accounting and Finance are passionate to promote financial literacy amongst incoming and graduating Blugolds, as well as the wider campus community.  We are thankful to the library for being our partner in hosting this first of a series of seminars on financial literacy.  We are fortunate to have Professor Alfuth, a Blugold graduate, to lead this series.  Professor Alfuth brings in significant experience from his successful career at Ameriprise, and teaches Wealth Management at the Department of Accounting and Finance in partnership with them.”

McIntyre Library will also be collaborating with the Financial Management Association (FMA) and a relatively new student group called Blu’$ Gold Financial Management, which focuses on promoting financial literacy and positive wealth management practices to the incoming freshman class and beyond. The organizations will be testing a game of their own design that aims to teach students about the outcome of their long-term financial choices, starting with their first salary and ending with their retirement savings account. Students from both groups will be in the library on Tuesday, May 2nd and Thursday, May 4th to talk with their peers about the game and answer questions about personal finance.
