2020 Graduate Wins Library Student Employee Scholarship

| Jenna Vande Zande

We did not print our newsletter, Off the Shelf, this spring, which is where we usually publish our announcements. However, we want to honor our most recent scholarship winner, Rebecca Mennecke, for her outstanding work as a McIntyre Library student employee.

We have awarded our fifth annual $250 McIntyre Library Student Employee Scholarship to Rebecca (Becca) Mennecke. Becca has worked in circulation at the main desk since her freshman year in 2017. Her major is in creative writing, and she has been involved in many literary and news publications on campus including The Flipside and The Spectator. She also is a driving force in the Eau Claire writing community as the editorial intern for Barstow & Grand, the local literary journal, as well as the writing intern for the Chippewa Valley Writers Guild.

Becca stated in her application that during her freshman year, she didn’t see UW-Eau Claire as “home” and she questioned if she had made the right decision on which school to attend. But because of how much she enjoyed her job in McIntyre Library, she decided to stay, and we are so glad that she did. Because of working in the library and the meaningful connections she has made here, Becca has decided to pursue librarianship as a career. With this decision, she also continues a family tradition as her sister, mother, and aunt have also worked in libraries.

Becca says it best in her scholarship application: “It has been a blessing to be a part of such a tight-knit community at McIntyre Library, constantly learning how to improve our services to students—as well as to community members. McIntyre Library is central to my experience as a student at UW-Eau Claire. At the front desk I meet many people that I later see and can interact with on campus. This job has given me a sense of community, of unity, with the Eau Claire campus. This is more than a job; it is a community. It is the reason I decided to stay and will always be the reason I love UW-Eau Claire.”

While the experiences gained working in McIntyre Library help students make connections and prepare for their careers, we are happy to help make college a little more affordable for Becca and future student employee recipients. When you plan your charitable contributions this year, please consider donating to our Student Employee Scholarship fund. You may make a donation online at https://connect.uwec.edu/library by selecting McIntyre Library Student Employee Scholarship from the drop-down menu.

Congratulations to Becca, and to the entire Class of 2020!
