LTS alerts about scam email

Attention students: A current scam affecting UW-Eau Claire students involves an emailed job offer that would allow a student to work from home and make hundreds of dollars a week. Those who respond to the email are sent a check and instructed to deposit it. The check is no good, but it takes several days for it to bounce. In the meantime, these criminals request their victims to send them cash by credit card, gift card or other means.

One of the current scams is by someone representing “VistaDispatch,” saying, “Would you like to work with us at VistaDispatch making $300/week?” — but there are literally hundreds of variations.

The end result is the criminals steal the victim’s money and the check they issued bounces. Students should know that if get a job offer via email (or postal mail) that seems too good to be true, IT IS. The should DELETE the email and not respond.

Students, faculty or staff who have questions should contact UW-Eau Claire’s information security officer, Steve Ranis, at ranissb@uwec.edu, or stop by the LTS Help Desk on the first floor of the Old Library, next to Blugold Central.
