Meet Johannah Erffmeyer

Ask Johannah Erffmeyer what first comes to her mind when she hears the words, “UW-Eau Claire”, and she immediately responds, “second home”.

Not surprising – the university has been a part of her life since she was two. That’s when she began attending the Children's Center, the university's day care center which was located where Centennial Hall stands today. Erffmeyer, who was born in China, learned English at the Children's Center, and has many childhood memories of the time she spent there. Her memories include setting up a lemonade stand outside of Schofield, playing on scooters in Zorn, and trick or treating in Schneider. Once in school, Erffmeyer and her friends came to campus for planetarium shows, foreign language classes, and Martin Luther King Day. Later, there were music and forensic competitions, the Viennese Ball, and even high school commencement, which was held in Zorn Arena.

Because of all of these connections, Erffmeyer hadn’t planned on becoming a Blugold.

“I never thought I’d come to UW-Eau Claire since I knew it so well,” she said. “But after visiting a variety of campuses in Wisconsin and Minnesota, I realized that UW-Eau Claire had everything I was looking for.”

Erffmeyer wanted a medium-sized campus that had strong academic programs in information systems and German. She also knew that she wanted to study abroad in Austria. Having professors and not teaching assistants teach her courses was important to her, as was class size.

She found all of this and more at UW-Eau Claire.

Since freshman year Erffmeyer has worked for the university’s Learning and Technology Services where she provides individual and group computer software training to faculty, staff, and students. She is a Campus Ambassador, co-president of the German Club, and a member of several honor societies. Last summer Erffmeyer and two other students traveled to Germany with several business faculty members to research the associated benefits of hiring individuals who have Autism Spectrum Disorder. They will present their findings at the university’s research day in May. During the fall 2016 semester, Erffmeyer studied German, and Austrian and German history and culture at the University of Salzburg in Austria. This summer, she will be an information systems intern at 3M in St. Paul. Eventually, she would like to work for a company where she can use her technology and communication skills as well as her knowledge of German.

Looking back, Erffmeyer knows UW-Eau Claire was the right choice for her because it has provided her with some amazing opportunities to learn and grow. She credits the people she has met on campus for making her time here extra special.

“I’ve been fortune enough to have made wonderful friends through work, living in Bridgman, through classes, and from being involved in student organizations,” she said. “My professors have all been motivating and always willing to help. I feel like I can always drop by and say hi.”
