A note from the current Chair on “Musical Chairs”

I wish to extend my greetings and good wishes to all our Languages-Department friends and to thank sincerely Carter Smith for six productive years leading our department forward, and more specifically for the tribute to Roma Hoff herein, an icon in our departmental history and an inspiration to all who knew her.

The “musical chairs” in the title applies to the current academic year. Carter is not fully off the hook yet, as he has agreed to return as interim chair in Spring 2017 semester, while I am on a research assignment at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ. We are grateful to Carter for this, his work over the last several years has brought home the importance of continuity, especially in these difficult budgetary times. Having been on the job only a couple months now, it has been an eye-opener on a number of levels. One gratifying aspect of this is the window it provides to the amazing work accomplished by the faculty, staff, and students of the Department of Languages, some of which you will read about in this newsletter, all of which focalizes our central place in UWEC’s vision and mission. And there is more to come!

So, stay tuned, and we thank you for your continued support – we need it now more than ever.

Dr. Matt Waters
