The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents approved an innovative tuition discount for future alumni of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Friday.
The Blugold Alumni Tuition Discount will provide a 25 percent tuition discount to all current and future UW-Eau Claire students who graduate within four years or less. The discount applies to any undergraduate courses taken by alumni up to five years after graduation.
UW-Eau Claire is the first UW System university to offer such a deep tuition discount to graduates. At the heart of the Blugold Alumni Tuition Discount is the university’s commitment to helping students graduate in four years, while also enabling them to take additional courses at a deep discount to expand their knowledge and skills during the early stages of their careers.
“This is a great day to be a Blugold. We are thrilled the Board of Regents supported our cutting-edge approach to increasing educational opportunities and decreasing student debt,” said UW-Eau Claire Chancellor James Schmidt. “It’s a big step forward for UW-Eau Claire, our students and Wisconsin employers.”
Beginning in fall 2016, all first-time, full-time enrolling freshmen will enter into a contract with the university that will enable them to complete their degree within four years. The plan will ensure that in addition to graduation in four years, students have the opportunity to study abroad, participate in internships or faculty-student undergraduate research.
The Blugold Alumni Tuition Discount rate is available to all four-year graduates regardless of residency, and the discount rate also applies to online courses. Graduates will not be able to use the alumni rate to cover independent study, internships or student teaching and practica.
Jake Wrasse, UW-Eau Claire student body president, said the Blugold Alumni Tuition Discount rate is exactly what students are looking for to continue their education.
“I know countless students who add another major or minor … this is going to allow students to realize you can graduate in four years with what you need, go out and get a job and continue your education,” Wrasse said.
Schmidt said employers and the business community as a whole will also benefit by employing UW-Eau Claire alumni.
“This innovative program is good for graduates, good for employers and good for the state of Wisconsin because it will help close the knowledge and skills gap that exists today and beyond.”
