An update from Dr. Kent Syverson, Chair, Department of Geology
A Blugold geology degree is valuable not only for what a student learns, but also for the respect it commands around the country. On May 3, 2016, the UW-Eau Claire Geology Board of Visitors met on campus to discuss curriculum, attend a poster session with some of our geology student researchers, meet Responsible Mining Initiative interns, and tour facilities.
The fourteen industry professionals on the board came from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Idaho, and Colorado. These geologists and engineers represented four environmental consulting companies, four mining companies, the Wisconsin DNR, and the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey.
The Board’s conclusions? First, a Blugold geology degree is extremely valuable and they are willing to invest resources to enhance the educational experience by providing internships, seminar speakers, and scholarships. Secondly, they like to hire Blugold geology graduates! This benefits a student while in school, and also provides a valuable professional network when seeking employment after graduation.
