Campus power outage planned Oct. 30 for electric service repair

There will be a planned outage of Xcel Energy electric service to the UW-Eau Claire campus from 4 a.m. until approximately 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 30.

The planned outage is necessary to repair equipment damaged by an electric connection failure on Oct. 22 at the main Xcel Energy electric service on University Drive. During the planned outage, Xcel will replace a switch cabinet that was damaged by the connection failure. The entire UW-Eau Claire campus will be without electric power during the outage.

During the outage, the emergency generator at the UW-Eau Claire heating plant will be employed to ensure continuous operation and supply of heat to campus buildings.  Other select buildings that have emergency generators also will have limited electric service available to power essential equipment.

Food service operations in Hilltop Center will be delayed until after repairs are complete. It is anticipated that Hilltop Center will open for breakfast with limited menu items at between 9:30 and 10 a.m. Sunday. Signs will be posted in residence halls and Hilltop Center informing students when food service operations will be open.

In advance of the planned outage, faculty, staff and students are advised to turn off their computers and to unplug sensitive electrical devices from electric outlets. This precaution is to prevent damage from potential power surges as electrical service is restored after repairs are completed.

Facilities staff are working with departments and units that may need to make special arrangements to prepare for the outage to prevent loss of ongoing experiments or other research in academic buildings and to prevent loss of perishable items. If you require special arrangements, please contact Chris Hessel, facilities operations manager, at or 715-836-2518.
