International Poetry Reading showcases languages from around the world

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will celebrate the beauty of language from around the world at the 11th annual International Poetry Reading from 7-9 p.m. May 3 in the Dakota Ballroom of Davies Center.

The event is free and open to the public.

During the event, students, community members, faculty and staff will read and listen to poetry written in 30 languages other than modern, standard English — including at least two languages not represented at the event in previous years.

Co-organizers of the event are Dr. Kelly Biers, visiting professor of French; Dr. Kaishan Kong, assistant professor of Chinese; and Katie Vagnino, visiting assistant professor of English.

"This event has become an important tradition at UW-Eau Claire, sharing and celebrating the beauty and diversity of the world’s languages," Biers said. "It gives us a chance to appreciate that every language has a different rhythm and musicality, and that all languages express complex ideas and emotions. It reminds us how language can bring us closer together."

The poetry reading will be live-streamed at for those who wish to experience the event but cannot attend.

The International Poetry Reading is hosted by UW-Eau Claire's English Festival, with support from the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, including a gift from Thomas W. and Debra R. King, and the university's Center for International Education and English and languages departments.
