LaRue Pierce has been named dean of students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire following a national search. He will begin his new duties Aug. 5.
Pierce will promote student success, access and development across the university; coordinate the administration of student conduct procedures; and serve as a deputy Title IX coordinator. He also will directly supervise the directors of Counseling Services and the Student Health Service, as well as several Dean of Students Office staff.
“Mr. Pierce brings a strong record of leadership in student affairs from a variety of institutions,” said Dr. Marc Goulet, administrative officer in UW-Eau Claire’s College of Arts and Sciences and co-chair of the dean of students search committee. “He's consistently been an effective advocate for students and a creative problem solver wherever he has worked.”
Benjamin Bechle, assistant director of Housing and Residence Life and co-chair of the dean of students search committee, said Pierce’s experiences in equity, diversity and inclusion will help strengthen UW-Eau Claire’s Division of EDI and Student Affairs.
“LaRue Pierce is a strong advocate for student success and will leverage his experience to be intentional regarding our policies and procedures as they affect students, faculty and staff, and the greater campus community,” Bechle said.
In his new role, Pierce said he looks forward to building on UW-Eau Claire’s many accomplishments and supporting the work of the university’s faculty and staff.
“I am honored to be appointed the dean of students at an institution I’ve held in high regard for more than two decades,” Pierce said. “I look forward to working with my new colleagues to support the university’s mission, enhance the student experience and academic success, and foster an inclusive living and learning environment.”
Over the past 19 years, Pierce has served in student affairs leadership roles at four academic institutions. Since 2015 he has been the dean of students at Springfield Technical Community College in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he also was appointed assistant vice president in 2017. He previously served as director of student affairs at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio; as associate dean of students and coordinator of judicial affairs at Vincennes University in Vincennes, Indiana; and as associate dean of students, Academic Support Center director and coordinator of judicial affairs at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.
“I am delighted that LaRue Pierce will join UW-Eau Claire in the vitally important dean of students role,” said Chancellor James Schmidt. “He has a great breadth and depth of experiences that have equipped him to lead existing programming as well as new initiatives to ensure the success of all Blugold students in achieving their higher education goals.”
Pierce joins UW-Eau Claire following the May retirement of the university’s former dean of students, Dr. Joseph Abhold.
