dreamer AND doer

| Emily Kaltenberg

Following your dreams is not always as easy as it may seem—sometimes life tends to get in the way or doesn't go as planned. Stacy Magnus knows this from experience. Stacy is a full-time speech clinician at a school district in Minnesota. She has always known she would love to continue her education and obtain her master's degree, but life circumstances put her dreams on hold for the past 25 years.

Working a full-time job and pursuing a master's degree seemed out of reach for Magnus until she discovered the online communication science and disorders graduate program at UW-Eau Claire. The flexibility of the online, part-time program allowed Magnus to finally pursue her dream and take steps to reach her goal of obtaining a master's degree. Not only did the UWEC program fit her lifestyle, she also knew the reputation for academic excellence of the university and the department. She enjoys the opportunity to take what she is learning and apply it on a daily basis as she works with her clients.

Magnus feels she has learned a great deal thus far in the program. Even though the program is online and part-time, the coursework is rigorous and the instructors are of the highest caliber. When asked to reflect on what she has already gained from the program, Magnus says, "Not only am I learning how to provide comprehensive therapeutic services to children and adults, but also how to do this with the highest professional standards."

Magnus feels becoming a Blugold has been beneficial in every aspect of her life. After losing her husband to brain cancer over two years ago, she was looking to rediscover some spark in her life. This program has certainly done that for her. She already feels more confident in her work as she continues to grow as a student and a professional. Magnus is glad her continuing education will allow her to provide the most comprehensive speech therapy services to the children and adults she has the privilege of serving.
