Learning advocacy strategies in DC

| Kristin Marit Brunsell and Jan Adams

Senior 1 student nurse, Kristin Brunsell, attended the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Student Policy Summit in Washington DC, March 25 -27, 2018.

Below are Kristin's comments about her visit.

This event was comprised of three days of powerful speakers from many aspects of the field of nursing, including nurse lobbyists, nurse politicians, nurse researchers and many more. One day of the conference brought us together with the Deans from our states. Dean Linda K. Young, PhD, RN, CNE, CFLE and I met with others and strategized and then headed to Capitol Hill. On the Hill we met with representatives from both of our state senators, Tammy Baldwin and Ron Johnson, and our representative here in Eau Claire, Ron Kind. At these meetings we discussed a variety of issues that are important to the field of nursing, including Title VIII, which provides funding for nursing education.

Attending the Student Policy Summit was an amazing experience. Seeing new avenues that are open to me as a nurse was astonishing and helped me to understand where I want to take my career. I saw the impact that these nurses are having on our profession and healthcare policy and how their work is impacting future generations of nurses and patients and I want to be a part of that change.

I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to UW-Eau Claire, the College of Nursing and the faculty who encouraged me and supported me in attending this Summit.
