Dr. Mary Canales. professor of nursing, received the Excellence in Service Award. Canales, who joined UW-Eau Claire’s nursing faculty in 2009, was cited by her nominators for her service to the university and Eau Claire-area communities in the area of food insecurity.
Throughout her career Canales has been committed to food and local justice issues, as well as public health and public policy research. In 2014 she and her research collaborators from Feed My People Food Bank and the Eau Claire County UW-Extension Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program earned a two-year development grant to support research on food insecurity and hunger in Eau Claire County.
“Food is a basic need that is not always met for all of our Chippewa Valley neighbors,” said Patti See, distinguished student services coordinator in UW-Eau Claire’s Academic Skills Center. “Dr. Canales advocates for those who cannot.”
“Mary embodies the UW-Eau Claire definition of ‘excellence in service,’ being involved in initiatives beyond the university which demonstrate responsibility to the broader community,” said Nancy Coffey, program coordinator for UW-Extension’s Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program and one of Canales’ collaborators.
