UW-Eau Claire team takes first place at SMIFC Conference

UW-Eau Claire finance students Kyle Kolb, Brock Schauer and Ben Zielinski took first place in both the stock pitch and the video pitch competitions at the 6th Annual Student Managed Investment Fund Consortium (SMIFC) Conference held October 4-5 in Chicago, IL. Also representing UW-Eau Claire were students Josh Zhan, Jeff Steers, and Dier Pulatov, and faculty member Mark Alfuth.

Students and faculty from 29 SMIFC universities attended the conference. In addition to participating in pitch competitions, conference participants listened to key note presentations by industry leaders and toured the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the Chicago Board of Trade Chicago.

The Student Managed Investment Fund Consortium is a group of 68 colleges and universities from across the United States. The group seeks to enhance student learning and scholarship, record best practices in investment management among SMIF partners, provide a vehicle for student networking and exchange of ideas, and provide a permanent repository of relevant literature and recorded student experiences. 2018 Competition Results

Pitch Competition
Teams submitted a 5-page paper, which included a maximum of 5-pages of attachments. The competition was judged by faculty members and industry professionals.

  • 1st Place - University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire
  • 2nd Place - Truman State University
  • 3rd Place - Hofstra University

Video Competition
Teams created a 7-minute YouTube video. The winning video was decided by vote by conference attendees.
