Grace Singer, In her own words

“With leadership comes great responsibility. I have learned that if something goes wrong, my name comes up first. If there are mistakes, I have to take responsibility and swallow my pride. Before UW-Eau Claire, I held a preconceived notion of how a boss/manager takes control and gains respect: being demanding, over qualified, and intimidating. However, through my experiences, I have learned that being personable with my peers, taking time to listen, and gaining everyone’s trust is what allows strong leadership skills to grow.

My education and experiences at UW-Eau Claire have contributed to my understanding of the role a leader should take. I strive to maintain my influence on others as a team guide, rather than a boss. I achieved this by leading by example, to mentor those around me. Instead of standing behind my team, I stand in front of them to pave a path to help them reach our goals.

Being president of the UW-Eau Chapter of the American Marketing Association has taught me the value of uniting people to achieve a common vision. Reflecting on this past year, I’ve learned that success is not something you can claim as your own, but rather you claim it as part of a team. It wasn’t just this year that helped us be the successful chapter we are today, but rather the development of leadership from past presidents, members and advisers. I am honored to have worked with some of UW-Eau Claire’s most dedicated and passionate young business professionals. Looking back on my time within the UW-Eau Claire community and the influence I’ve had on my peers makes me want to further pursue leadership positions within the marketing profession.”.
