Dr. K. Brewer Doran has been named dean of the College of Business at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Doran, who has had extensive experience serving as the business college dean for several institutions, will begin her new role on a part-time basis starting Oct. 1 and join UW-Eau Claire full time on Nov. 1.
UW-Eau Claire’s previous College of Business dean, Diane Hoadley, retired in 2016. Dr. Timothy Vaughan, a member of the College of Business management faculty since 1997 who was named associate dean of the college in 2012, has served as interim dean since Hoadley’s retirement.
As College of Business dean, Doran will provide leadership for the college in all student, academic, fiscal and personnel matters.
“We are pleased that Dr. Doran will serve in the leadership role in our College of Business,” said Patricia A. Kleine, UW-Eau Claire’s provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “Her richly varied background, including serving at the helm of several business colleges, teaching at the college level and an early career of more than a decade working in the private sector, will be a strong combination in guiding our widely respected business programs forward.”
UW-Eau Claire’s College of Business, accredited since 1980 by AACSB International, has 55 full- and part-time faculty members who teach approximately 2,200 undergraduates students enrolled in 13 majors and emphases, eight minors and six certificate programs. The college also has approximately 300 students enrolled in its online MBA program.
“I am delighted to be joining the College of Business at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire,” Doran said. “I will be joining a highly talented and seasoned faculty and staff who are deeply committed to maintaining the university's dedication to providing the best possible experience and outcomes for its students. I look forward to building strong relationships with our students, alumni and business community, and to working with faculty and staff across the university.”
Doran most recently served as dean of the Offutt School of Business at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., from 2015 to 2018. Before her position at Concordia, Doran was dean of the Bertolon School of Business at Salem State University in Salem, Mass., from 2005 to 2015. She also served Lasell College in Newton, Mass., from 2000 to 2005, where she became the inaugural dean of the School of Business and Information Science and also served as an assistant professor of marketing. Doran also taught as a lecturer and instructor at several colleges and universities in Colorado, Calif. and Quebec, Canada.
“Dr. Doran’s prior dean positions have given her a breadth and depth of knowledge and experience for understanding contemporary issues that face higher education, and specifically colleges of business,” said Dr. Carmen Manning, chair of the College of Business dean search committee and dean of UW-Eau Claire’s College of Education and Human Sciences. “Dr. Doran is a strong collaborator and understands how to build a team of people to work together toward shared goals. She has excellent experience in building consensus toward a shared vision and strategic direction. She also has an impressive track record in building relationships with alumni and community partners that have led to successful strategic partnerships and fundraising.”
Doran received a bachelor’s degree in art history and anthropology from Dartmouth College and an MBA from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, followed by 12 years of work experience in private industry before beginning her career in higher education. She also earned her doctorate in cross-cultural marketing from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, and completed the Institute for Educational Management through the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
